*Below the skin, we're all the same
Paper Skull + Calligraphy intervention
Collaborative work of Beto Janz and Jackson Alves

Beto Janz, a graphic design college classmate (2000-2003) and big friend nowadays, is currently living in Canada. He came to Brazil in early 2018 and made an exhibition of his fantastic work in Curitiba (my town). After the end of the exhibition, he gave me one of his paper skull posters to create a calligraphy intervention freely.

As my personal work usually has no deadline, now and then I end up postponing it in order to do the commissioned works first. The same happened with this one, and I think I even broke my record, since I started to work on this only a year after receiving the poster.

But personal work is cool mainly because it has no deadline and the focus is entirely on the result and satisfaction of working on it! In the end, we both enjoyed the result a lot, and I hope you enjoy it too!

Check out the whole project below :)

The concept

Skulls can bring different meanings to different people. For me it carries two meanings:

- Future: The only certainty we have in life is death, the skeleton is what will remain of our bodies.
- Equality: Below the clothes, skin color or sexual orientation, we are all exactly the same.

I decided to work on the second meaning ‘equality’, and I wrote the phrase:
*Below the skin, we're all the same.

*PS.: Maybe it's correct to write ‘under the skin’ instead of ‘below the skin’, but the decision to adopt 'below' is because the aesthetic of the letter B is too much better than the letter U. That is a visual piece, so I needed to consider this seriously… and in the end, the letter B got really better!

O conceito

Então eu decidi trabalhar no segundo significado "igualdade", e escrevi a frase:
"Below the skin, we're all the same”
Traduzindo: “Abaixo da pele, somos todos iguais".

PS.: Talvez seja correto escrever "under the skin" em vez de "below the skin", mas a decisão de adotar ‘below” é porque a estética da letra B é muito melhor do que a letra U. Essa é uma peça visual, então eu precisava considerar isso seriamente. E no final, B ficou muito melhor!
